Cool hair: Banned

Are you kidding me?  Tagged , , , , No Comments »

Poor little Bryan Ruda.

This spunky six-year-old boy has been suspended from kindergarten in Parma, Ohio because his hair is cooler than the other kids’.

Bryan has been warned three times about his mohawk, which is banned because it supposedly “interferes with the content of education” and “distracts other children.”

Please. The school system clearly hates children with style, and the other kids are jealous.

“I understand they have a dress code. I understand he has a uniform. But this is total discrimination,” said Bryan’s mother, Michelle Barile. “They can’t tell me how I can cut his hair.”

Amen!

The real question here is: where are the students with mullets? This is Parma, Ohio, after all. (I grew up in the Midwest, I can say this. I have seen plenty of mullets during my time in southwest Michigan.) Why aren’t the mulleted students getting suspended? Because THAT is a hair style that should be banned.

Tax & Spending Issues  Tagged , , , , , , 2 Comments »

I know this news is a bit old, but I just think it’s so awesome. The news I’m referring to is Wesley Snipes’ tax case, in which he was acquitted of the serious tax charges (federal tax fraud and conspiracy) he faced for refusing to pay taxes and file tax returns for a number of years. In doing so, he became “an unlikely public face for the tax-denier movement, whose members maintain that Americans are not obligated to pay income taxes and that the government extracts taxes from its citizens illegally.” He was, however, convicted on three misdemeanor counts of failing to file tax returns.

I think this partial acquittal is especially awesome because my husband (Jared) and I recently did our taxes, and we are not happy. The self-employment tax (Jared is an independent contractor) is just plain robbery. So, I suggested to my husband that we “pull a Wesley Snipes” on the IRS this year to solve this problem. We simply send in a tax return that says “$0.00″ on it, with a note attached that says “Thanks for asking, but we are not obligated to give you any money. Especially since you waste it.”

He, however, was not as excited about this plan as I was. He said something about “going to jail to make a point” was “a hassle.” Hmph. Even my best dramatic “Are You Saying That Defending Your Liberty Is A Hassle?!” speech didn’t sway him. Well, maybe next year. In the meantime, I’ll be cheering on NTU (National Taxpayers Union) for their work to defend taxpayers.

Whoops…I’ve been MIA.

We’ve had some technical difficulties during the past week over here at Blogivists, but I think we may be up and running again now. I’ll be posting again later today–stay tuned.

Go Free Yourself: The Inspiration

I have a confession to make.

I don’t really read a lot of blogs. And by not “a lot,” I mean almost none. I think they’re great, I know how they work, I think their impact is awesome, and so on–but I just haven’t maintained obsessive readership of any.

Except for one.

Go Fug Yourself is my all-time favorite blog. It’s, bar none, my most visited website. I love it. If you’re unfamiliar with the concept, allow me to brief you: the Fug Girls (Jessica Morgan and Heather Cocks) take to task celebrities who, for all their fortunes and fashion-forwardness, often show up in public wearing the most bizarre–or fugly (frightfully ugly)–combinations of clothing. It’s hysterical, and it’s a must-read site.

As you’ve undoubtedly ascertained by now, Go Fug Yourself is my inspiration for this blog. When I was trying to figure out the purpose and the name for this blog, I thought to myself, “what kinds of blogs do I read and why?” And while I was slightly embarrassed to admit that my one most visited site is one that chronicles celebrity fashion mishaps (instead of, oh, discussing important political issues or something), I realized that my favorite kind of blogging is similar to what the Fug Girls do.

You see, the Fug Girls believe this fashion-challenged celebrities should know better. They ridicule them when they dress poorly, they praise them when they dress well, and they make helpful suggestions for improving (like, “invest in PANTS, not leggings”).

In a nutshell, this is what I aim to do, only in relation to politics. You can expect to see sarcastic mockery of bad political behavior (like wasting tax dollars or passing nanny laws), praise for good behavior (like eliminating earmarks), and helpful tips/resources/suggestions for improving or for taking action to get involved–because, after all, being a “blogivist” is not just about saying something, it’s about doing something.

And, of course, there will be plenty of links to The Onion, fun YouTube videos, and more. Go Free Yourself is a place for fun, political discussion, and getting involved in the movement for liberty. I hope you’ll join me.

Hello!

This is my first post on Blogivists–get excited. Whoo!

I’ve been blogging for the past year at the Tea Party, the Sam Adams Alliance blog, so feel free to head over there and check out some of my older posts. You’ll find that I often pen sarcastic missives about government corruption, nanny laws, and wasted tax dollars. I’ll do more of that here, but I’m also excited about the chance to branch out and develop the direction of this blog as my very own. The world is my proverbial oyster, as the saying goes.

Stay tuned. We’re going to have a lot of fun.
